Advice for beginner photographer on editing pictures?

I recently got into photography and am using iPhoto to edit my pictures, which is ok at the moment ... What are the best things to do when editing a photo?

I would suggest looking into some weekly challenges or picking up a book with photography projects. There are some good ones that are weekend projects that walk you through the concept and the process of achieving the results which can really help you learn new things that you might not explore on your own. That's how I improved my skills too.
