Gold coast escape triggers police internal investigation

Police launched an internal probe after video of an escape from police station in Sydney last Saturday sparked concerns over safety inside the station.

They released the footage last night, showing an incident involving two officers at the station at 9.45am yesterday.

It shows officers dragging Mr Wilson over a footbridge into the station on foot and handcuffing him. They place a cloth over his head and a blanket over his neck, while he sits in a chair under the station fence.

When he is finally freed, Mr Wilson is forced to leave the vehicle in which he was being held, and to lie face down on the grass outside the entrance to the station.

The footage was first reported on Friday morning, sparking fears of a police-based terror threat. It has since been handed to police.

On Saturday evening Police Minister Megan Andrews confirmed it was an internal investigation being carried out, adding it had seen no credible intelligence that terrorism was a concern in the wake of yesterday's incident.

Ms Andrews said on Sunday that an "internal and outside" review was underway.

"I do have a little bit of information out there and, at this stage, it appears to be an internal review with concerns surrounding the police officer involved in that incident," she told 3AW on Sunday.

"There is no reason to believe that this is an actual threat to our community."

The police chief at the time, Superintendent Andy Scales, confirmed police were monitoring the video footage closely and the department would have to conduct an internal review of the matter.
